6th Annual Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic

Pine trees Classic

On Feburary 10, 2007, the smell of bbq hot dogs and burgers filled the air around Pinetrees in Hanalei Bay, HI. The beaches were filled with little kids running in the sand with shaved ice in one hand and a surf board in the other. The 6th annual Irons Brother Pine Trees Classic was yet again another huge success. Passing out back packs full of sick surf-related goodies to some 138 contestants, Andy and Bruce Irons certainly did not fall short in supporting the kids from the local community. It's their unique way of giving back to the community that they were raised in, Andy and Bruce Irons personally hosted a free surf competition for all of the local kids. Showcasing their talent and shredding through 1-3 foot high waves, these groms were having just as much fun in the water as out. Throughout the day Andy and Bruce casually hung out with the kids and later signed autographs for many eager little ones, giving these kids a memory that will last forever.

The Irons brothers' contest is much different from all the other contests held throughout the islands in that it is for girls and boys ranging in ages from 6-12. It is a non-competitive contest, enabling the kids to compete with out feeling the pressures of a real competitive environment, creating more of a fun community event. The event categories included, 6-8 year old “push in" boys and girls, 9&10 year old boys and girls, and boys and girls 11 to 12. Organized by Andy, Bruce, Phil and Danielle Irons and run by Nelson Togioka and many volunteers from throughout Hawaii’s surf community, the days' event is more of a community event as opposed to a strict competition.

Once the kids are done surfing their heat they go and grind free food donated by Tim Kerlin and the Hanalei Gourmet, and free shaved ice from Kapa’a’s Tamba crew. With a family bbq or South American block party-like atmosphere, the entire day was fun-filled for people of all ages. When the competition was over Bruce and Andy gave out sick prizes to all of the winners, and every kid left Hanalei Bay with a huge smile on their face. Bruce gave out three surf boards to three very, very excited kids. The Irons Brothers Pine Trees Classic continues to be one of the most popular and fun filled events on Kauai, and continues to provide a fun filled community event for everyone involved.

In addition to all of the many volunteers from around the community, the Irons Family, the following sponsors donated time and goods to make this event such a success: Volcom, Billabong, DaKine, Nixon, Red Bull, D.C. Shoes, Oakley, Body Glove, Von Zipper, Amp Mobile, JS, Surfboards, Hanalei Gormet, Tamba Sports, Kai Kane, Hanalei Surf Company, Y.M.C.A, Nalu Underground, Transworld Surf and Surfer, and Surfing Magazines.
